Hello dear riders and explorers,
We are truly happy you chose Corfu and Greece as your holiday destination—welcome!
In this post, we share practical tips for riding a scooter in Corfu, including local regulations, road conditions, and important things to keep in mind when renting and riding.
These are not “secrets,” but real insights based on our daily experience on the island and the feedback we receive from our Vespa travellers.
In today’s information-rich world, it’s easy to overlook the basics—so this guide is here as a friendly and helpful reminder.
What You’ll Find in This Guide
👉 If you are still deciding whether renting a scooter is the right choice for you, you may find this guide helpful: "Tips for Renting a Scooter or a Motorcycle in Corfu, Greece"

Driving Regulations and Safety Guidelines:
Always carry your driving licence with you
In Greece, we drive on the right-hand side of the road
Wearing a helmet is mandatory
Wearing gloves is optional
Do not drink and drive (for motorcyclists, the legal alcohol limit is 0.2‰ / 0.02%).
Adjust your mirrors before starting your ride
Always use the centre stand when parking your Vespa
Always lock the steering when parking
Where to park?
You can generally park in areas where there are no yellow lines or signs indicating restrictions.
However, always use your judgement when choosing a parking spot.
Do not block windows, doors, or entrances
Do not park between cars or at taxi stations
Do not park in front of monuments
Avoid parking with the top case exposed to moving traffic
Free parking is widely available across the island, including in Corfu Town.
In some areas, you may notice scooters and motorcycles parked along pedestrian streets. If you choose to park in such areas, approach slowly using designated ramps and ride with extra care, as stone pavements can be slippery.
Navigating Tips and Road Conditions:
Google Maps is generally the most reliable navigation tool—but always stay alert, as even it can occasionally suggest unsuitable routes.
If something feels wrong, trust your judgement and choose an alternative route.
👉 Important tip for Northern Corfu:
Set your mobile network to manual mode before your ride. Otherwise, your phone may connect to Albanian networks, which can result in additional charges.
Road Awareness
Road conditions may vary—smooth sections can suddenly become uneven
Watch for potholes and bumps
Dark patches on the road may be oil stains
Roads near olive groves may be slippery
Gravel or dirt may appear even on main roads
Narrow Roads & Local Traffic
Many of Corfu’s scenic countryside roads are narrow, winding, and built long before modern traffic needs. It is not uncommon to encounter larger vehicles, such as buses, partially entering your lane when turning or navigating tight sections.
For this reason, we recommend riding at a relaxed pace, especially on blind corners, and always leaving enough space to react calmly and safely.
Driving Awareness
Always follow local speed limits
Drive slowly, especially in areas with high tourist activity.
Be prepared for:
pedestrians
cyclists
sudden stops
people looking for directions
In villages:
children may be playing near the road
older residents and animals may cross unexpectedly
For Motorcycle Riders
Scooters do not lean as much as motorcycles
Road conditions may affect handling
Front brake: right hand
Rear brake: left hand
Rental Procedures & Precautions
Before riding:
Inspect the scooter carefully (including underneath)
Take clear photos of any scratches or damage
Inform the rental company immediately
📷 Tip: Photos are more effective than video for capturing small scratches, especially on polished surfaces.
During rental:
Confirm your return time
Understand your insurance coverage
Ask what is included and what is not
⚠️ Important
Off-road driving is not allowed
It can damage the braking system
Insurance does not cover off-road incidents
If renting from another company, confirm their policy before attempting any off-road routes.
Never allow an unauthorized person to drive the scooter
Safety Gear and Equipment:
Always wear your helmet
Wear closed shoes and appropriate clothing
Long sleeves are recommended
Use sunscreen during daytime riding 💡 Practical Tip
Store helmets in the top case or under the seat
Remove the phone mount when parking and store it safely
Emergency & Incident Procedures
If an incident occurs:
Take photos of the location and any damage
Inform the rental company immediately
If another vehicle is involved:
A police or insurance report is required
Contact the rental company right away
